Early storm
This is the storm that's just hitting my house right now. The little bit of red just above the fence line is a lightning strike. A line of thunderstorms from Texas to Kansas hit this afternoon that spawned tornadoes in metro OKC, including one that was on the ground for ten minutes. There were no deaths reported so far and only three minor injuries, even though one man in a trailer was sucked through a window and thrown outside. The line has finally hit my little town, thankfully after dark where tornado activity is much less prone. I do have a storm shelter, but I don't think it will be necessary. However, with all the lightening, I think I will post this as quickly as possible and shut off my computer. The "storm season" is a month away.
Glad you made it through the storms. I don't miss those! Except...when we have a big thunderstorm here I often find myself staring in awe and fascination out my window....
Hope you and your home made it out of that storm okay! I can't believe tornadoes occurred in February. I hope this doesn't mean it's going to be a bad tornado season.
Thank you. Me and my house only got a brief but intense rainstorm. February is awfully early, and I have the same thought about hoping early doesn't mean bad.
Oklahoma is called the Sooner State, because when the state was opened up land was given away not by lottery but by land run, in a "shotgun start" style. At a certain time, all the settlers lined up at the starting line took off at a dead run and ran as fast as their buggies, coaches, buckboards, horses and legs could take them until they could find land that no one had claimed, 160 acres at a time. Unfortunately, not everyone waited for the starting shot and took off Sooner than they were supposed to: hence, the Sooner State. This bronze statue, actually a series of statues depicting the land run, is found along the canal in Bricktown, in downtown Oklahoma City (OKC) and when finished will be the largest bronze statuary in the world.
